Hikes in Oxnard: Chumash Trail, Rocky Peak, Hines Peak

Getting outside and exploring is one of the best ways to see the area, especially if this is a new place that you haven’t visited before. Hiking is a great way to get outside, exercise, and see beautiful views. There are a few hikes in the Oxnard area that we want to highlight for visitors who are planning their trip here soon!

One of the hiking trails we would like to mention is the Chumash Trail. This 3 mile round trip trail is near Port Hueneme, and this area is very popular for hiking with stunning views guaranteed. The best times to visit this trail are from December through October, so plenty of time if you are planning your next visit. A few things to know before you head out on this trail is that dogs are not allowed, and although this is a short route, it is generally considered to be a challenge so make sure you are prepared before heading out. Before any hike, it’s always best to be prepared with adequate clothing, sun protection, water, snacks, and anything else you may need to assist on this hike.

Another amazing hiking trail option is Rocky Peak. This trail is 5 miles, but described as easy to moderate, and is accessible from the westbound 118 freeway at the Rocky Peak Overpass. There is limited parking at the trailhead, but there is additional parking across the freeway bridge. This trail also goes out-and-back, but if you want, you have the option to take the Chumash Trail down to the westernmost boundary of the property. This works as long as you have arranged a ride back to the Rocky Peak Trailhead for your parked vehicle.

There is also Hines Peak trail, which is the longest and most difficult trail of all the ones we listed. This trail length is just over 20 miles and an elevation gain of over 5,000 feet, this trail is a hard level of difficulty. For those who love to go backpacking, camping and of course hiking, this is the trail for you. You can also find many other people on this trail while exploring. Open year round and has the most beautiful views waiting to be explored. Dogs are welcome on this trail, so you can plan accordingly if you have your fur friends joining you.

Starting January 2, 2024, the resort will undergo a state mandated balcony/stairs repair project. Noise and construction may affect the resort guests. We anticipate this project to be completed in August 2024. As with all renovation projects, it is our goal to adhere to the aforementioned schedules; however, they are subject to change.
